Bio
Katharine Lorraine is a director, actor, and teaching artist. After graduating from Juilliard for acting, they were drawn more and more to the larger questions around storytelling beyond their own characters. Their work centers deeply truthful acting while finding delight in big theatrical gestures.
Having spent years in immersive theater with “Sleep No More” (Punchdrunk), “The Bad Years” (Evan Bernardin Productions) “The Grey Man” (Pipeline Theater), Katharine took those world building skills to directing. Their first theatrical production was “The Winter’s Tale” with Juilliard’s Center for Innovation of the Arts program, Beyond the Machine. The piece included original compositions by Joshua Abraham Getman (Oedipus in the District) and featured actors Danaya Esperanza (Buena Vista Social Club) and Kambi Gathesha (What to Send Up When It Goes Down.)
Bringing storytelling to the tiniest screen, your phone, Katharine developed a short Instagram series, “Kiosk.” Along with collaborators Kerry Warren, Drew Barnett Gregory, and Paola Alexandra Soto, the series went two seasons featuring actors Scott Aiello, Frankie J. Alvarez, Carl Hendrick Lewis, Crystal Lucas-Perry, Kareem M. Lucas, Claire Karpen, Jo Mei, Ali Sohaili-Lopez, Andrea Syglowski, Robert Eli Thompson, and many more.
Katharine returned to performing for the workshop of immersive disco show “We Are Here” (Spiegelworld) with choreographers Steven Hoggett and Yasmine Lee (Harry Potter, A Beautiful Noise). They worked with the team again on “Social!” (Park Avenue Armory) created by Hoggett with musician David Byrne (The Talking Heads) and set designer Christine Jones (Harry Potter, American Idiot.) It was one of the first theatrical productions post pandemic.
Katharine has had the opportunity to hone their craft directing productions at educational institutions including “Self Defense, or Death of Some Salesmen,” “The Columnist,” “Apt. 3A” (Stella Adler Studio of Acting); “Down in the Holler” (NYU); and “Honk!,” “The Hope and Heartache Diner” (The Berkeley Carroll School.)
Currently, Katharine is working on the development of several new plays. Along with playwright and intimacy director Joey Massa, they received the 2024 HB Rehearsal Space Residency to workshop a new play about restorative justice for sexual violence.
